To help you out, we’ve put together a list of all the South African universities with no application fee — and a list of South African university application fees for 2024 so that at least you know what to prepare for.
Universities with NO APPLICATION fee for the 2024 intake
Stellenbosch University
Stellenbosch University does not have an application fee for South African applicants from Quintile 1-4 schools and for international applicants.
Applicants from Quintile 5 schools are required to pay an application fee of R100. However, the Stellenbosch indicates that you may apply for an application fee waiver. For more information see the Stellenbsoch University Website.
The University of Free State
- UFS does not have an application fee
The University of Johannesburg
- UJ does not have an application fee for online applications. Paper applications require an application fee of R200
North West University
- NWU does not have an application fee
Nelson Mandela University
- NMU does not have an application fee for South African applicants, but does have one for foreign students according to their FAQ
North-West University
- There is no application fee for South African applicants, but international applicants will have to pay a fee of R575
Cape Peninsula University of Technology
- There is no application fee for CPUT online applications, but paper applications are charged a R100 application fee
Other notable mentions:
- Sol Plaatje University has not had an application fee historically. To keep up to date with their applications for 2024 check their website regularly
- UWC had no application fees last year. Check their website for updates for when they release their 2024 application dates and info
Universities with application fees for the 2024 intake 💸
Not all universities have released their application dates and fees for the 2024 intake. Here’s a list of the ones that have though:
University of Cape Town
- The application fee for UCT is R100
Sefako Makgato Health Science University
- The application fee for SMU is R200
The University of Pretoria
- The application fee for UP is R300
The University of Witwatersrand
- The application fee for Wits is R100 for South African applicants and R700 for international applicants
Rhodes University
- The application fee for Rhodes is R100
University of KwaZulu-Natal
- The application fee is R210 for South African applicants, R420 for late applications, R490 for students from SADC and other African countries, and $153 for international applicants from outside Africa
Tshwane University of Technology
- The application fee for all applicants is R240
University of Venda
- The application fee for all applicants is R100
Mangosuthu University of Technology
- The application fee for all applicants is R500
Vaal University of Technology
- The application fee is R110 for South African applicants and R120 for international applicants
